New Project

On the Farm..
Yesterday Harland began another project.  We recently had to do some repairs at the basement end of our house to replace the rotting railroad ties used for retaining walls.  We replaced railroad ties with stone walls.  It was an awesome change for that end of the yard and it looks so different.  So the new project is a grill/smoker/oven addition at the end of the brick wall and patio area.  Harland spent evening before last and yesterday morning scurrying around getting all the materials together.  He also had to move dirt from the bank at the end of the wall.  The footer has been poured and we are now engaged to this new project.

I forgot to add in yesterdays post that I lost my Brown Leghorn rooster.  When I went to feed and pick up eggs the night before, I forgot to close their little door where they go in and out of the coop.  I imagine they were all out yesterday morning and exposed to any predator about at that early hour of the day.  We saw a big red fox last week at 9am running from the arena/coop area across the driveway and into the woods.  It could have been one of the big hawks that we often see.  Then there are the coyotes that come up from the back of the pasture.  A few years ago they killed all of our neighbors kids (baby goats) and took a leg from one of the nannies. Don't forget the raccoons of which Harland has caught in live traps in the barn.  All excellent reasons to not forget to lock the girls up at night.  Sad about my rooster but fortunate that I didn't lose more chickens.

From the Pantry...
We had friends Bill and Darlene Nichols for supper last night.  Bill is the carpenter that did the construction in the basement.  Super talented man.  He made it through many trials while working with us and was always able to give us great suggestions.  For example we needed an extra large door for the pantry because of the refrigerator and freezers. A regular hung door would have extended far out into the living area when opening and closing.  Bill came up with a wonderful idea to put up a sliding door.  We love it!  I will probably share more of his creative solutions in future posts.

They gifted us a beautiful wooden bowl that Bill made along with a bottle of our favorite muscadine wine.  Thankfully supper preparations turned out well and I didn't burn the bread. (Harland and the girls claim I always burn the bread)  We had a great visit talking about our kids, family and recent vacations. The menu included country fried steak with gravy, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, tossed salad, crowder peas, applesauce and rolls.  Happy to share recipe (see below).

Isn't this beautiful!  I just love it.  Thanks Darlene and Bill!
